*The Philippines*is an island country in the southwest Pacific Ocean. And is consist of 7,000 islands that have a total area of 115,831 square miles (300,000 square kilometers). The 11 largest islands make up more than 95 per cent of the country. Less than half the islands have names and only 900 of them are inhabited. Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is the nation's largest city and busiest port. Spanish explorers colonized the Philippines in the 1500's. They named the islands after King Philip II of Spain. The Spaniards converted most of it's people to Christianity, but some kept their own religion. Today, the Philippines has more Christians than any other nations in Asia.In 1898, Spain gave the Philippines to the Unites States as part of the treaty that ended the Spanish-American War. The United States ruled the islands until the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth in 1935. During World War II, Japanese forces controlled the isalnds from 1942 to 1944. The United States regained control of the Philippines in 1945 and granted it independence on July 4, 1946. The new nation adopted a Constitution and economic system to those of the United States.
